Is it too good to be true? | Cheap wedding photography cautions & what to look for

Your wedding photography is one of those things you may not fully appreciate until the day is over. The flowers wilt and the cake will be eaten — but your photographs are what you'll have left to remember how the day actually looked and felt.

So when you're planning a wedding on a budget, finding a photographer at a surprisingly low price can feel like a win. But before booking the cheapest option, it's worth asking: what are you actually getting for your money?

Rather than looking at price alone, I recommend looking at the level of experience, preparation, equipment, backup systems and service of your vendors when it comes to an occasion that can't be recreated.

Low cost photographer

May rely on a single memory card

May only store one copy of your images

Editing may be inconsistent with some details overlooked

Insurance, booking systems & contracts

Not always included

Planning guidance

Can make recommendations and help create a realistic photography timeline

May rely on the supplied schedule and information

Posing & direction prompts

Confidently directs couples, families and bridal parties for flattering results

Still developing their approach

Last minute changes

Can quickly adjust when plans change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances

May not have experience adapting under pressure

Reliability and reviews

Has a variety of public reviews, portfolio galleries and online presence

May not have an established track record

Note: there are exception to every rule. A newer photographer may have excellent equipment, insurance and backup systems, while an experienced photographer may work differently. If unsure, always ask.

There's more to it than having a 'good camera'

What happens when your ceremony runs 15 minutes late? Are they organised and able to adapt if you suddenly have less time for photographs than planned?

Do they know how to work efficiently under pressure, still guiding you through poses and making sure each important grouping is captured?

Can they tell the story of an entire wedding, or are you only seeing a handful of beautiful images?

It's easy to think wedding photography is simply about having an expensive camera. But there's much more to it.

You're also paying for their professional experience, for the moments they know to anticipate and for the problems they can solve (sometimes without you even knowing).

Questions to ask before booking

Before choosing your wedding photographer, ask:

"Do you have backup equipment?" What happens if their primary camera or lens fails?

"How are our photographs protected?" Ask about memory cards and image backups.

"What happens if you become sick?" There should be a clear contingency plan.

"Do you have insurance?" A legitimate professional should be comfortable answering this, and some venues will require public liability insurance.

"Can I see a full wedding gallery?" This is one of the best ways to assess consistency, as opposed to Instagram highlights.

"How do you handle difficult weather or lighting?" Your photographer can't control the weather, but they should know how to prepare and adapt.

"What's included in the package?" Check hours, edited images, albums, travel and any additional costs.
